THE TILDEN MINE | MI

Updated | October 8, 2024

Status | Active - Operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.

Location | Ishpeming, MI

Type of Mine | open pit, truck and shovel – iron ore (hematite and magnetite) mining and processing

Estimated Mine Life | ~15-23 more years

Anticipated Output |  8 million long tons/yr

Concerns |

  • The remaining ore deposit is low grade. Therefore, extracting the ore generates a large amount of waste.

  • Approximately 1830 acres of wetlands and lakes have been destroyed since 1963 to allow for mine expansion.

  • Cleveland-Cliffs had applied to expand the site again by 78 acres for additional waste storage. This expansion would fill additional streams and wetlands. The application was withdrawn in June 2024, but is expected to be resubmitted.
